Cut the hardline to the mainframe!
Well we had a another retread of a storyline that sputtered way before it ended.
The series had done it earlier in the episode “Cooperative Calligraphy”. In that episode the whole gang becomes stuck in the study group because Annie gets fed up when her pens go missing. What didn’t work in “Basic Email Security” were same premise in the cafeteria with predictable jokes.
In episode six Community starts to tackle the issues of data breaches that have recently occurred (such as Home Depot and Target ). The reason? The school hired a very controversial comedian to do an event.
What starts out as a defense of First Amendment quickly turns sours as the emails of the committee groups are leaked. This led to most of the scenes being in the cafeteria.
Once the dam broke the jokes starting pouring out, albeit not powerfully. Most of the time I was hoping for the jokes to be metaphysical or have the Community style we’ve grown accustomed too. However, this jokes seem like the ones that shouldn’t have really made it out of it.
The controversial comedian also didn’t help with the obvious insensitivity jokes.
Thankfully the end joke with the kid security guard was fun. I liked how the writers made fun of cop movies and the relationships between the two partners.
Overall I wish this had been a more inventive episode. But hey, every season has a few episodes that don’t click.
Here are some of my other thoughts about the episode:
- Elroy commenting on how the name “Hackers” is a dumb.
- Jeff being pragmatic by not going against the group’s will.
- Elroy’s outdated attire.
- The Avengers joke about Joss Whedon’s limited creativity in the movie.
